All privately-held businesses will transition at some point – either by design or by default. 90% of privately-held business owners agree on the importance of business planning, yet only 33% have a business succession plan. An exit by design rather than by default is critical to preventing the hidden liability on the balance sheet (estate taxes) from destroying the competitive positioning that the business owner and management team have worked so hard to establish. This presentation will identify the key drivers that underlie the business dynamics and the family dynamics and then illustrate a three-pronged approach to designing an integrated business succession plan that aligns the goals and objectives of the business and the family and allows the business owner to direct more hard-earned dollars back into the business, the family and the community, rather than maximizing a bequest to the IRS.
Ms. Rounds works with clients on matters of tax and estate planning, business succession, risk management, philanthropy, family governance and legacy. Teaching highlights include the UGA School of Law and College of Business, the Becker CPA Review Course and the NYU Summer Institute on Taxation. Susan makes frequent presentations and her articles have been featured in leading publications. She holds a BBA in Accounting, a JD, and an LL.M. in Taxation. She is also an AEP®, sits on the Board for the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils, and serves as editor for the NAEPC Journal of Estate and Tax Planning.
